declare yourself

My family has never been very politcally active, but I have voted since I turned 18. What I really dislike is when people complain about the nation’s political system – or politicians and their wrongs, but they do not cast a vote. It is one thing to complain or to dislike where America is going, but to just plain not partake in your RIGHT to vote is unacceptable.

Recently I came across this site, Declare Yourself. Somewhat like Rock the Vote, the non-profit, nonpartisan organization and its founder Norman Lear aim to get 18-year-olds registered to vote. According to the website, Declare Yourself registered over 1.2 million voters in the 2004 and 2006 elections. And Rock the Vote has been inspiring young people to vote since they began their public service announcements in 1992. Both movements are looking to engage young Americans to get involved in the issues important to them and make their voice heard.

Why am I writing about this? Because it’s important for people to get inspired and participate. It is especially important for our generation – GEN Y – because we are the future of the United States. Don’t just watch from the background – get involved! Cast your vote. It really is the most American thing you can do.

Make your voice count.

  1. Preach it! It makes me so angry when people feel like they don’t need to vote ‘because their vote doesn’t really matter’ anyway. People who came before us DIED for the right to vote. It is an honor…

  2. […] shock, has anyone seen Jessica Alba’s new ad for Declare Yourself? I discussed the campaign here. […]
